As V.I. residents chain-sawed downed trees and swept up leaves strewn about from Monday’s adventure with Hurricane Earl, Tropical Storm Fiona and another low pressure system just behind it continued their march toward the Caribbean.
While meteorologist Walter Snell at the National Weather Service in San Juan doesn’t expect Fiona to be too much of a problem, the territory should get scattered showers and light wind Wednesday night as the storm passes “several hundred” miles to the northeast.
That said, Snell suggested that residents not put their porch furniture and plants back outside in case there are some heavier gusts.
“And it’s moving pretty quick,” he said.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Fiona is centered at 16.7 degrees north latitude and 57.7 degrees west longitude.
The wind speed stands at 40 mph with higher gusts. It is moving west northwest at 24 mph. The barometric pressure stands at 1006 millibars or 27.71 inches.
Snell doesn’t expect that low pressure system located far out in the Atlantic Ocean to develop into much in the near future.
“It’s disorganized, and it’s got a lot of dry air north of it. It’s not helping it at all,” he said.
However, since hurricane season officially runs until Nov. 30, residents and visitors need to remain vigilant.
