The University of the Virgin Islands will name the residence hall complex on the St. Croix campus after Delta M. Dorsch at a dedication ceremony in her honor at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, according to a press release from UVI. It will be renamed the Delta M. Jackson Dorsch Complex.
“This is an exciting day in the life of the university, especially the St. Croix campus,” said UVI President Dr. David Hall. “To honor an educator who has given so much to this community is an act consistent with the university’s mission and vision. We will enshrine in these walls not only her name, but her spirit of excellence in education.”
Dorsch, a native of Frederiksted, worked for more than 30 years as a teacher and supervisor in the V.I. educational system. She served as the territory’s deputy commissioner for curriculum and instruction from 1977 until 1982 and also taught elementary education in undergraduate and graduate programs on the St. Croix campus of the UVI.
A member of the Commission on the Preservation of Virgin Islands Culture and of Our Town, Frederiksted, Dorsch is a valued tradition bearer, who has devoted her life to keeping interest in Virgin Islands culture alive. Using her gift as a storyteller, she has been a leader in the effort to protect V.I. folktales from extinction.
“It is an honor to have the residence hall complex named after a dedicated educator, mentor and tradition bearer,” said St. Croix Campus Executive Administrator Claude Steele. “This ceremony highlights the legacy of Mrs. Dorsch.”
The residence hall complex, which is located at the head of Palm Drive, is comprised of 15 three-bedroom suites. Following the renaming ceremony, a reception will take place in the Pavilion on the St. Croix campus.
