Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. has proclaimed the month of March as Social Work Month in the U.S Virgin Islands, a time to increase public awareness of the social work profession by fostering a positive, supportive work environment throughout the year.
Social workers have cultivated the requisite education and experience to guide individuals, families and communities through various challenges, connecting people to resources that are available to benefit their lives whenever and wherever they are most needed.
As positive and compassionate professionals, social workers are dedicated to improving the societies in which we all live. They stand up for others to ensure access to the same basic rights, protections and opportunities.
During this designated month and throughout the year, we reflect on the history of the profession, celebrate the important work in progress, and look toward to a future of promise for the individuals, families and communities we serve.
This month, the National Association of Social Workers Virgin Islands Chapter (NASWVI) will be conducting presentations at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School and the St. Croix Central High School on March 14 and 15, respectively. Social workers from a variety of areas, to include school social work, medical social work, child protective services, juvenile justice, foster care and juvenile intensive intervention services, and veterans’ services, will be speaking to 11th and 12th graders about social work as a career.
On March 24 and 25, on St. Thomas and St. Croix respectively, the NASWVI will be hosting full-day workshops called “Veterans: Issues, Benefits, Services…What’s Next?" This workshop is free for all veterans and at minimal cost for UVI students and the general public.
On March 29 and 30 on St. Croix and St. Thomas respectively, the NASWVI in conjunction with the Department of Human Services will cosponsor Breakfast Recognition Ceremonies for social workers across the territory.
Governor de Jongh calls on all Virgin Islanders to support their professional social workers and the human services delivery programs designed to assist families and individuals lead productive and satisfying lives, and encourages all Virgin Islanders to attend any of the above events set for Social Work Month.
