Insular Investigation Bureau detectives on St. Croix arrested Pearl Veronica Lake, 58, for a litany of charges that police said stemmed from an embezzlement case at an insurance agency.
According to the affidavit filed by detectives, the embezzlement occurred between September 2007 and February 2008 while Lake was employed by the Golden Grove Insurance Agency. Police said Thursday that while Lake was an insurance agent she took roughly $114,000 from customers in insurance premiums without authorization and used the money for personal purposes.
She was arrested and charged with criminally influenced and corrupt organizations, two counts of forgery, two counts of embezzlement by fiduciaries, and two counts of obtaining money by false pretences.
Lake, who lives in Estate Stoney Ground in Frederiksted, was arrested early Thursday morning and placed on a $50,000 bail.
She was unable to post bail and was remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
