Federally-Mandated Race and Ethnic Survey Being Conducted in V.I. Schools

0
A Race and Ethnic Surveyis being conducted in Virgin Islands public schools following new guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education regarding the collection of data on race and ethnicity for public school students, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Randolph Thomas, director of Planning, Research and Evaluation of the Virgin Islands Department of Education.
A short questionnaire titled “Race and Ethnicity Re-identification Form” is being sent home to parents for completion this week. “All families with students attending public school are being asked to provide information on each student’s race and ethnicity,” Thomas wrote to parents. Besides personal information, in most cases there are no more than two responses to the questionnaire. The information gathered from this survey will be added to or used to update students’ personal files at their respective schools.
