Security Remains Tight at JFL Hospital

The Juan F. Luis Hospital remained on heightened security Friday after tightening measures Thursday while treating two dangerous prison inmates.

According to a release from the hospital, security was increased Thursday after two prisoners were brought to the hospital to be treated. One was discharged and the other remained hospitalized Friday.

The hospital said Thursday that the heightened security included an increase in the number of
security personnel on the hospital site and at all entries. The hospital did not discuss any other methods, if any, that were employed.

The hospital emphasized that anyone needing care would continue to be seen by JFL’s medical
team, and that no one would be denied access to needed services. Friday, for instance, a dozen adults were examined and treated at the emergency room as a result of the apparent chemical release that caused schools across the island to be closed.

"JFL’s enhanced security measures are a result of an assessment of the hospital’s current level of safety," the hospital reported in a news release sent by Xaulanda H. Simmonds-Emmanuel. "In particular, JFL is providing care to patients from the prison. These patients are also secured by additional measures to protect them, other patients and families. By maintaining safety and security, the JFL team focuses on providing quality patient care services to our patients, their families and the community.
