Virgin Islanders Taylor Canfield and Cy Thompson have added another all-American notch to their respective sailing belts—after years of representing the territory at various national and international events, they have again joined the list of top college sailors.

With Canfield representing Boston College and Thompson at Roger Williams University, the duo wrapped up their 2011 school year by leading their colleges to a 1-2 finish at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Team Race National championship at Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge.

According to the results, Roger Williams finished first after three days of racing, while Boston College was runner-up. The ICSA is made up of seven conferences, with the best 14 collegiate racing teams vying for the title.

Following the races, the ICSA All-America Team, along with recipients of several other awards, was announced; and it was little surprise Taylor and Canfield—all-Americans in ’09 and ’10—again made the list.

Selected by a committee of coaches representing the ICSA’s seven conferences, all-American criteria included demonstrated leadership, outstanding boat-handling skills, as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails, the release said.

In addition to their all-American status, the two V.I. sailors were also in the running for the Everett B. Morris Trophy, awarded annually to the college Sailor of the Year for outstanding performance at the highest level of sailing.

Thompson and Canfield are both graduates of Antilles School on St. Thomas.
