Norma Louise Cable Conroy, a longtime visitor to the Virgin Islands, died suddenly May 24 in Edison, N.J. She lived life vibrantly and with enthusiasm. A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 28. She was buried at Saint Peter’s Cemetery in New Brunswick, N.J.
Norma was born Jan. 7, 1924, in Caldwell, N.J., to Norman Cable and Mary “Mae” Dodd. Her father was a locomotive engineer for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, and her mother worked for Thomas Edison in his West Orange laboratory.
Norma began her career working for the Oiljack Company in Montclair during WWII, then left to be with her husband who served in the U.S. Army. After the war, Norma and Jack raised a beautiful family with eight children, and she became an accomplished cook. When the children were grown, she returned to work for Rhone Poulenc, Hermann Trucking, and most recently, managed the Discovery Unit for the Edison Township Police Department until the age of 81, when she retired.
She was a longtime resident of Edison, a dedicated parishioner and Eucharistic minister at Saint Matthew’s Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Rosary Society.
Norma was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, John Paul Conroy; her son, John Norman Conroy; her parents; and her sisters, Emma Mae and Viola.

She is also survived by her son, Christopher Conroy and his wife, Annette of Hillsborough N.J.; daughters: Colette Conroy Monroe and her husband, Brad of Water Island, Wendy Varone of Manhawkin, N.J., Jaculin Norma Zangara and her husband, Jack of Edison, N.J., Maureen O’Brien and her husband, Blaise of Barnegat, N.J., Pamela Nastasi and her husband, Nick of Little Egg Harbor, and Teresa Jo Acampora and her husband, Frank of Bristol, Conn.; 21 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
Norma was a beloved wife, remarkable mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a true friend. She was a pillar of her Dey Place-Louise Road neighborhood and was often called upon to assist in medical emergencies. She was a mentor and teacher to many. Norma will be missed for her delightful humor and her generous spirit, but she will never be forgotten.
