Virgin Islanders offered free energy efficiency workshops

The University of Virgin Islands, through its CELL program, is offering residents the opportunity to learn how to save money and energy in their homes or businesses. A series of free workshops will help Virgin Islanders take charge of electricity costs by giving them the tools and information they need to conserve energy and make their energy use more efficient.
The workshops will focus on energy saving methods for the home or business; wind and water renewable energy solutions, solar hot water heaters; and the Energy Star program.
They will be located at UVICELL Center – St. Thomas Campus and at UVICELL Center – Frederiksted, St. Croix. The presenters will be Bevan R. Smith Jr. and Heru Ofori-Atta.
Although the workshops are free, participants must register as space is limited. To register, complete the registration form and fax to 693-1115 or send to [email protected]. For convenience, participants may download the workshop flyer and registration form.
Energy Office unveils program to help island businesses
The Virgin Islands Energy Office is unveiling a program to help small businesses territory-wide cut their power consumption. The program is known as the Worthwhile Investments Save Energy (WISE) and is part of the Better Buildings Initiative of the federal Department of Energy. Participants in the WISE program will be eligible for rebates of up to 40 percent of their project costs for energy efficiency retrofits to their businesses.
Eligible applicants are small retail and service businesses with utility usage of 30,000 kWh monthly or less. To qualify, businesses must own their buildings or have long-term leases. An application for the rebates is on the Energy Office Web site at www.vienergy.org.
“This is the most recent program being developed by the Energy Office to assist rate payers in reducing their energy costs and to specifically help small businesses, which play such a vital role in our community, survive the present economic hard times.”
