UVI President David Hall, left, has a lot to smile about Thursday as he stops by Cruzan Rum to get a donation from the rum distiller's CFO, Marvin Pickering.Economic times might be tough, but that didn’t stop Cruzan Rum officials Thursday from continuing and even expanding its support for the University of Virgin Islands.

Cruzan Thursday increased its annual donation to the company by 60 percent, from $25,000 in 2010 to $40,000 this year.

Marvin L. Pickering, senior vice president and CFO of Cruzan VIRIL Ltd., said though the donation amount has fluctuated over the years, the company’s support of UVI has been unwavering. He added that, since 1987, Cruzan Rum has given the university $655,000.

“We are totally committed to giving to UVI annually,” Pickering said. He said the response from students has been one of appreciation.

Gary Nelthropp, president and CEO at Cruzan, said UVI is a key player and very important in the future of business in the Virgin Islands. He said it is nice to have UVI as a resource on St. Croix, and he wants to help keep it that way.

UVI President David Hall accepted the donation at the Cruzan Rum headquarters in Estate Diamond. Hall said the university is thankful for the donation, especially with the economy lingering in th doldrums. UVI’s budget is shrinking and extra resources mostly aren’t there, he said.

“This support allows students to realize their dreams,” Hall said. “And it allows us to fulfill our mission.”

Pickering said Cruzan is proud to have UVI graduates employed at the company, and their performance speaks well to the education they received at UVI.

Two of those grads are Narissa Mapp and Magdalen Joseph, employeed at Cruzan in finance and accounting. They were also on hand for the presentation. Pickering added proudly he is a 1985 graduate of UVI.

“This contribution will go far. At UVI you get a big bang for your buck,” said Dionne Jackson, the school’s vice president for institutional advancement. “UVI is a sound investment for everyone.”
