Darnell “Burger” took MVP honors as the Hoyas reclaimed the NBBA Summer Basketball League championship trophy with a well-orchestrated dismantling of defending champions Guidance, 80-68.
Coach Sammie Lee had promised fans a different Hoyas team for game five, after losing game four on Monday, and he delivered with a game plan that appeared to catch Guidance off guard. That game plan apparently was to run the ball, and that they did until they ran Guidance into submission in the fourth quarter.
Guidance, the defending champs, had their moments with a few mini runs, but they just could not sustain any for long. The victory gave the Hoyas their fifth championship in six years and took back the crown they loaned to Guidance in 2010.
The largest crowd of the season turned up Wednesday to watch Virgin Islands basketball at its best. The crowd grew so large the fre department ordered the doors closed because the gym had reached it maximum capacity. No one else was allowed to enter from that point.
Those lucky enough to gain entrance were treated to an atmosphere reminiscent of March Madness, with a packed venue and loud, boisterous fans loyally covered in their team’s colors and proudly displaying their banners. Many were on their feet for the entire contest.
Guidance controlled the opening tip, but the quarter belonged to the Hoyas as they made their intention known from their first possession, pushing the ball up the court. They would outscore the defending champs 18-14 in that opening stanza behind eight points from Burger.
Joelfry Polanco came alive in the second period for Guidance with three long three-pointers, but his efforts were negated by a balanced attack from the Hoyas who took the quarter 25-19 for a 10 point lead at the half, 43-33.
It was also a different Burger that the Hoyas fans were seeing as well. He was basically shutdown by the defense of Eric McBean in game four, but Wednesday was a different night and McBean could not keep up.
A 21-16 third period led by the smoking hot hands of Burger Hendrickson, who finished with nine points in the quarter, saw the Hoyas enjoying their biggest lead of the game, 15 points, at 64-49 heading into the final frame.
Showing the heart of a champion, Guidance refused to quit, and after a two-point basket by Kitwana Rhymer and back-to-back three-pointers by McBean, they were back in the game, down by just seven.
But they would get no closer. The Hoyas quickly righted the ship and restored order. Guidance did take the closing quarter 19-16 but it not nearly enough. Rhymer tried to do it all by himself with 10 points in the period, but he was visibly gassed in the final couple of minutes.
Hendrickson led all scorers with a game-high 27 points for the winners. He was ably supported by twin brothers Karl and Kurt John. Kurt finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds and Karl had 14 points and 11 boards. Quinton “Q” Guirty, who made a huge difference defensively for the Hoyas, finished with 13 points. Rhymer led three Guidance players in double figures with 25 points. McBean finished with 14 and Polanco netted 13.
