Police Caution Street Racers Against Labor Day Drag Racing

Street racers looking for a high-speed thrill should think again, the Virgin Islands Police Department warned, saying officers will be on heightened alert for illegal drag racing in the St. Thomas/ St. John district, particularly in Coral Bay, during the Labor Day weekend.

The holiday weekend runs from Friday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 5.

Acting Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman said the department has zero tolerance for street racing and anyone who is caught will face severe penalties.

“I have personally inspected the site and it is not suitable for drag racing," he said. "The site is unsafe for both drivers and spectators. Any race held there could potentially result in serious injury or even death.”

Police will continue enforcing all traffic laws during the holiday weekend including but not limited to speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegal vehicle alteration and uninsured or unregistered vehicles on both islands.

Acting Commissioner Hyndman also emphasized that illegal drag racing becomes especially dangerous when the racers are often young and inexperienced.

St. John Deputy Police Chief Darren Foy added that in the past individuals have travelled to St. John during the Labor Day holiday weekend to race illegally on the public roadways in Coral Bay. Although no injuries were reported, he said police have prevented and will continue to prevent the crowd from racing in the area.

Acting Commissioner Hyndman said the safety of this community remains the police department’s number one priority.

“We are prepared to implement necessary measures to avoid any occurrences due to illegal drag racing in this district,” he concluded.
