The U.S. Coast Guard has reopened the ports in Saint Thomas, St. John, and Lime Tree Bay in St. Croix, following then-tropical storm now Hurricane Irene, but St. Thomas-St. John ferries will only run sporadically, Coast Guard and ferry officials said Monday.

All other ports in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico remain closed until further notice, according to a Coast Guard statement released shortly after noon.

Ferry service between St. John and St. Thomas will run sporadically and will not run into the evening, a Transportation Services official said at noon.

Coast Guard Port Assessment Teams aboard Coast Guard vehicles, response boats and MH-65 Dolphin helicopters are working to prepare the remaining ports to safely reopen the navigable waterways as soon as possible, according to the Coast Guard.

Ports that have been reopened may resume all port and maritime operations.
