National awarding-winning photographer Steve Rockstein announces the opening of Fstop, St. Thomas’ first art gallery dedicated exclusively to photography. Located in historic Tillett Gardens, a long-time home for island artists, the grand opening is set for 4-9 p.m. on Monday, Sept 19. The public is invited.
“If the first time in my 40-year career, I have both a gallery to display my work…and a photo studio where I can continue to create the intimate, artistic portraits I am known for,” Rockstein said.
Fstop will also serve as a base for Rockstein’s photo classes, which begin Oct. 4.
“During the last few years I’ve had nearly 100 students… several have turned pro… and all have grown tremendously as photographers, and watching that growth is very, very exciting.
“Now I have a place where I can expand my education program. Which will include bringing in world-class image-makers from all over the world to exhibit and talk about their work. I believe Fstop is destined to become the center for all things photographic on St. Thomas,” he said.
Rockstein opened this year with a career retrospective exhibit, which toured four galleries for six months. His work is in the hands of several prestigious private collections and has been published and exhibited worldwide.
The VI Council on the Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Association of News Photographers, The Society of News Designers, The International Center of Photography and many other organizations have honored Rockstein’s work.
“And for added pizzazz on opening night, I will preview images from my latest art project, ‘Tattooed Virgins.’”
