Christiansted National Historic Site on St. Croix will hold an essay, drawing, and coloring contest for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, the National Park Service announced.

Winners will be announced at the Park’s Service’s Teen Summit, which will be held Dec. 31.

The essay contest is open to high school students from throughout the island. Those entering must write a 250-word essay on the topic: “Why is it important to protect our Natural Resources on St. Croix?”

Entries must include a cover page with topic, name, grade, and name of school, if applicable. Essay must be typed, double spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman with all margins set to one inch.

The winner will receive a Tablet 7 in Android 2.2. Second prize is a 22-inch flat screen TV, and third prize is a digital camera.

Entrants in the drawing and coloring contest – students from kindergarten to 12th grade – must draw and color a natural "thing" that makes St. Croix beautiful, such as birds, coral reef, turtles, Buck Island, or historic places.

Those wishing to enter should submit two drawings – one black and white line drawing and one that has been colored. Uncolored drawings can be duplicated and then colored. Drawing must be done on 8.5 by 11 inch paper.

Prizes for the drawing and coloring contest will be awarded in three categories – elementary, junior high, and high school – with the top three drawings in each level receiving art kits.

All entries can be dropped off at Fort Christiansvaern Fee Office or mailed to National Park Service, Contest Entry, 2100 Church St. No. 100, Christiansted, VI 00820. All entries must be received or postmarked by Dec. 22.
