The Virgin Islands Humanities Council is accepting nominations until March 12 for its annual Heath Award, which honors two certified grade K-12 public school teachers — one from the St. Thomas-St. John district and the other from the St. Croix district — who have exhibited outstanding ability and unfailing dedication to teaching the humanities. Humanities disciplines include language and literature, history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, folk life studies, jurisprudence, philosophy, ethics, comparative religion, and the history and criticism of the arts. Each winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a commemorative certificate.
The award was established in 2003 through a generous donation from Dr. Alfred O. Heath in honor of his wife, the late Geraldine Heath, a former teacher who held a passion for educating and empowering others.
