Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. has proclaimed the month of March as Women’s History Month in the Virgin Islands, a designation made each year to honor the many outstanding contributions of Virgin Islands women in the classrooms, boardrooms, courtrooms, political arenas, the military, and in homes and communities.
As part of the 2012 tribute, on Tuesday, First Lady Cecile de Jongh launched a public awareness campaign to celebrate the many efforts of women as role models, mentors and trailblazers in positively impacting the territory’s social, economic, cultural and political environment, especially amongst youth.
The 2012 theme, as put forward by the National Women’s History Project, “Women’s Education — Women’s Empowerment” pays tribute to the generations of women whose efforts have shaped and improved the quality of life for all women and all citizens, in the territory and worldwide.
This year, Mrs. de Jongh invites students to participate in the 2012 tribute by writing to her to share a story of personal empowerment. Students are encouraged to visit her Web site at www.governordejongh.com/
The first lady will review the submissions, some of which will be featured in the media as part of the community-based tribute.
“Every year, we recognize Virgin Islands women from all backgrounds who have taken strides in making the territory a better place for all. Throughout the month, you will be hearing stories of empowerment from students in our community, including personal accounts about careers, families, and notable achievements. I am delighted to kick off this month-long salute as we highlight the accomplishments of Virgin Islands women and raise awareness on the rich history of those who came before us and those who empower us now and in years past,” First Lady de Jongh said.
Referencing the power of mentorship in advancing community well-being, the first lady also said, ”We must guide and prepare our next generation of women to not only seek out those who will empower them but also, in turn, provide that same leadership to others in due course. In this way, we nurture a collective well-being that provides direction, hope and inspiration to others for years to come.”
Stories of empowerment will be broadcast throughout the month on radio stations, including: WSTA (1340 AM), WIUJ (102.9 FM), and WGOD (97.9 FM) on St. Thomas and on WSTX (970 AM), Sunny 99.5 FM, and Da Vybe (107.9 FM) on St. Croix. Submissions will be aired during regularly scheduled newscasts on weekday mornings and evenings.
The First Lady also commended the Commission on the Status of Women for its instrumental efforts in improving the positions of the territory’s women in the areas of health, housing, justice, pay equity, family relations, legislation, employment and political status.
