Committee on Education, Youth and Culture
Agenda:
The committee has scheduled a meeting to receive testimony on these various items:
First item:
Closure of Schools – The committee will investigate whether there are plans to close any schools in the territory and if so, the reasons for the closures and the status of discussions with various stakeholders
Financial Status of the Department of Education, including cash flow projections to the end of the fiscal year, whether there are any further dismissals planned in the department, and a discussion of the impact of budget and allotment cuts on key programs and activities of the department.
The status of school bus services, including a discussion of how funds will be identified for the continued payment for services.
Second item:
Culture, Education and the Workplace — The committee will address the interaction between culture, the educational process and workforce development, and it will specifically address the issue of the infusion of Virgin Islands history and culture into the curriculum and the status of the department’s efforts to comply with the mandates of Title 17, section 41(c), V.I.C.
Third item:
Culture and Economic Development – The committee will elicit testimony on how we can better utilize Virgin Islands and Caribbean culture as a tool for economic development.
Fourth item:
Culture, Food and Health – the committee will receive testimony discussing the interaction between our cultural heritage and practices – particularly as it concerns diet, herbal remedies, attitudes towards medical care and exercise – and indices of community health.

The committee has scheduled a meeting to consider the following bill:
Bill No. 29-0271 – An Act amending Title 5, V.I.C., section 2550, relating to the termination of parental rights of parents
