First Friday Expo Continues to Grow

Some of the participants at the First Friday Business Expo. The more than 200 business owners and others at the First Friday Business Expo looked to be more friends than competitors, as they laughed, hugged and hung out at each other’s booths at Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort.

It was a bigger crowd than the May expo, evidence that the free monthly event continues to grow and lure more businesses and participants.

“I’m excited to see new people come out to participate. The idea of networking is kind of the spirit behind it,” said Vernon Araujo of Melee Media and the Young Professionals Network.

Araujo said the expo allows job-seekers, employers and those who simply want information to meet and collaborate.

“You never know who’s going to be here. You meet people you would’ve otherwise never met,” he said, pointing out government officials, tourists, business owners, musicians, a fire dancer, and even a boxer and pageant queen.

Carol Lane, administrative assistance at the Virgin Marley’s shopping center, praised the expo for allowing all types of businesses and residents to participate for free. She was excited at the opportunity to promote little-known businesses.

“The best way to get your product noticed is to get out here and show it off,” said Bruce Flamon of 1-855-VI Services, who helps organize the event. “We partner together to encourage local businesses to come out and show your product.”

“New people are coming out and hearing about it. It’s a great concept,” said events manger Jessica Hume. “These seem to be getting bigger and bigger. [Flamon] is going to need a bigger venue!”

This month’s expo also served as a fundraiser for Dial-A-Ride Transportation, which recently lost funds due to budget cuts. The Dial-A-Ride program was designed to assist senior citizens and the disabled with transportation.
