Sponsored by Ananda Nilayam, Center for Conscious Living, Hawaiian Hula with Diandra Jones will be taught from 7-8 p.m. the next two Thursdays, Aug. 23 and 30. Learn the basics of ancient Hawaiian Hula dance. Diandra has just returned from Chicago where she resumed her studies with the renowned Lanialoha Lee, a native Hawaiian who has dedicated her life to the perpetuation and preservation of Hawaiian culture. Diandra will teach participants how to "ami," how to "kuku" and how to "uwehe," among other foundational Hula moves, including a small section of an ancient chant. Come bare-soled, and if possible, bring a long flowing skirt in which it is easy to move. Drop-ins are welcome.
*Capoeira Angola with Kojo Johnson will be taught from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. Treinel Kojo Johnson, an instructor from the D.C.-based International Capoeira Angola Foundation with 25 years experience, will lead a class in the African-Brazilian art form, which blends self-defense with acrobatics, dance, traditional music and philosophy. Dress comfortably and prepare to dance barefoot.
Adult Ballet with Katie Zaytoun is taught from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays ($10/class).
Belly Dance with Elena will resume from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6.
