While residents of the Virgin Islands may not be able to vote in the upcoming presidential election, they can cast their ballots in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Caribbean Vacations List. And the territory’s Tourism Department hopes you’ll vote for the U.S. Virgin Island, it indicated in a press release issued Friday
According to U.S. News & World Report, “Your expectations for the perfect Caribbean getaway can fade fast without proper research and planning. Many islands boast the stereotypical ocean breezes, warm white sand and crystal clear water of postcard lore. But some have limited activities away from the resorts and beaches that are too jam-packed to enjoy. Let our research help you pick the best and most affordable Caribbean vacation for any time.”
Voters must decide whether the Caribbean destinations belong on the list. They’re then ranked according to the number of votes they receive.
On Friday evening, St. Martin/St. Maarten was leading the list with 1,149 “yes, belongs on the list” votes. The U.S. Virgin Islands was fifth with 645 yes votes.
Each island comes with a travel guide that includes things to do, hotels, photos, and more.

If the VI wants to be competitive and showcase its natural beauty then the beaches and our roadsides need to be free of all the trash and garbage constantly littering them.
All of the vacationers I speak with comment on our rubbish strewn roads and the amount of wild, roaming chickens and roosters they see while driving around or hear when vacationing at their vacation rentals. Noisy, wild, roaming chickens and roosters are becoming an epidemic. This is not appealing to visitors coming from pristine locations and have been to other islands that do not encourage these problems to persist and keep their islands CLEAN.
Why do we have to continue to allow our islands to look like a dump? Since WMA was created we have less bins and more trash. Why is that? There needs to be a concerted effort on the Gov. and Tourism’s part to clean our islands up before it is too late. We are an eyesore compared to most other places. What happened to our pride?
Making our islands safe for all people to enjoy would be a step in the right direction, as well. Everyone moving or vacationing here, first ask about what areas are safe and about crime. Surely, in a location that boasts less then 110,000 people, we should be able to target those responsible for importing all these guns that are used to harm and kill those unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Deal with these issues and we shall attract more tourists to help our economy.
