Cyril Adolphus Barnes, a centenarian and oldest WWII veteran in the U.S. Virgin Islands, born Dec. 22, 1910, received his wings on Aug. 17, 2012, at the age of 101.
He is survived by his son, Harold (N.Y.), daughter, Violet Barnes Hughes (N.Y.); sister, Leona Barnes Shulterbrandt (St. Thomas); brother, Alphonso Aaron (N.Y.); grandsons: Eric Stevens, Julius Hughes; granddaughters: HelenaMarie Stevens, Sherise Hughes; greatgrandchildren: Anthony Stevens (N.Y.); Kimitra Stevens (Penn.), Eric Stevens Jr.; nephews: James Francis (N.Y.), Rudolph G. Shulterbrandt (St. Thomas); nieces: Gail Shulterbrandt Rivera (St. Thomas); Alvilda Augustin; goddaughter, Yvette Edwards (N.Y.); cousins: Arnold Barnes, Leneta Barnes Ford, Ruth Barnes Hansen, Shirley Barnes Jacobs, Cheryl Barnes Francis, Ray Barnes, Harold Brown and Janet McAlpin; special alliances: American Legion Post 85 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 85; very special thank you:Delroy Christian, and Carmen Soto and family: special friends: Brenda Bastian and family, Tove Lorentven, Emile James, George Thurland and family; Vargrave Tutein and family; Myra Garcia and family, Delroy Christian, Dr. Dilip Naidwani and family, The Peppertree Terrace Community/family; as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A first viewing will take place at 8:30 a.m. at Post 85 American Legion Hall on Monday, Aug. 27. A second viewing will be held at 10 a.m. and a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, at St. John’s Anglican Church. Interment will follow at Kingshill Cemetery, Veterans Section.
