Motorists Urged to Obey School Bus Safety Law

0

St. Croix School Bus Safety Inspector Owen Hennemann is asking motorists to be careful and courteous on the road now that school is back in session and to always follow the School Bus Safety law when buses are loading or unloading.
“It has come to our attention that some motorists are not stopping when school buses are loading and unloading students,” Hennemann said. “When a motorist sees a school bus with the flashing red lights on and the stop sign out, he or she needs to stop immediately; students may be crossing the roadway.”
The School Bus Safety Inspector informs motorists that the law states, “The operator of any vehicle or motor vehicle shall bring his vehicle to a stop not less than ten feet from the front when approaching and not less than ten feet from the rear when overtaking or following any bus displaying flashing signal lights … Vehicles so stopped for a bus shall not proceed until the bus no longer displays flashing signal lights.”
“Let us all be proactive in ensuring that students are transported to and from school safely,” he advises motorists. “They might be the sons or daughters of someone you know.”
