Second Graders Invited to Join in Field Day Exploration

0

The St. Croix Environmental Association, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Network of Environmental Educators, has announced a new program for the 2012-2013 academic year: Field Days for 2nd Graders. The first field day is scheduled for 9:15-11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Sandy Point National Refuge. Approximately 65 students are expected from Claude O. Markoe Elementary School, St. Patrick’s Elementary School, The Good Hope School and Sunny Isle Baptist School.
The goal is to take every 2nd grader on St. Croix on an investigative field trip. Determined by the proximity of the students’ school, students will visit one of three locations: Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, Southgate Coastal Reserve or Salt River – Columbus Landing. Students will engage in three of five hands-on inquiry bases activities with two overarching questions for the day: Why is this area protected on St. Croix? How is this area similar and different to other familiar places such as students’ homes and school grounds?
Activities will include turtle adaptations, comparing plants, beach exploration, a close look at fiddler crabs and mangroves, sand sifting and where does sand come from?
