Police on St. Thomas have been unable to determine that foul play was involved in the late-December death of a homeless man whose partially decomposed body was discovered in Estate Hospital Ground, the V.I. Police Department reported Wednesday.

Police were notified that a man was found dead in thr residential area on Dec. 27. Area residents told officers the man was homeless and often slept in the area.

The deceased, known only as “Billy” and believed to be in his late forties or early fifties, was found in Estate Hospital Ground on the ground, in a sleeping position with a sheet covering his legs and waist.

A resident told officers he had smelled a foul odor, looked into a yard and saw the body. Police were notified at about 5:30 p.m. Dec. 27 and were dispatched to the scene. Neighbors said they last saw the deceased on Dec. 20 or 21. The body was in early stages of decomposition and signs of foul play were undetermined at that time.

The body was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center, but no further determination has been made.
