The Frederiksted waterfront park and pier areas will get increased lighting to augment the police presence in the area, officials from the Office of the Governor told hoteliers, restaurateurs and retailers Friday during a meeting at the Arthur Abel Complex in Frederiksted to discuss public safety issues on St. Croix.

Representatives from various departments and agencies of the government, community groups and senators were also present.

Attorney Richard Evangelista, senior policy advisor to the governor, convened the meeting on public/private sector cooperation in addressing public safety concerns, according to a release from Government House.

“Public safety issues are one of the territory’s biggest concerns, and a top priority for the administration, Evangelista said. "We recognize that different approaches are required to address the crime in our neighborhoods and downtown areas, and that a key element is communication and involvement by all. This is the third time this group has met and each time we have had a frank and productive discussion on action items, accomplishments and next steps to create noticeable change and improvement.”

Along with the increased lighting and police presence, the V.I. Police Department will coordinate community meetings with the Office of the Governor.

Also present were representatives from: the V.I. Police Department, Port Authority, Department of Tourism, the St. Croix Foundation, the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce, the Hotel and Tourism Association, Christiansted Restaurants and Retailers Association, Our Town Frederiksted, We the People, Coconuts on the Beach, Cane Bay Films, and Sens. Judi Buckley and Kenneth Gittens.

The group will meet again in late February.
