Major Underground Work in Christiansted Done; Work on Strand Slated

The V.I. Water and Power Authority and its contractor, J. Benton Construction, have completed the major work required for the Christiansted Underground Project Phase II and will shift its effort to Strand Street, the utility announced Saturday.

All roads where trenching took place have been repaved, according to WAPA’s statement. Crews will continue to use a water dispersion truck alongside a sweeper to control any remaining construction dust on the roads.

From Monday to Wednesday work crews and equipment will return to work on Strand Street which will be closed from Queen Cross Street to King Cross Street daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WAPA said that despite its best efforts during the past year, the authority was unable to secure permission to trench onto a property in the area to lay underground conduits, so the contractor will construct a transformer vault and a riser to maintain an overhead line connection to a utility pole outside of the property. Every effort will be made to complete this work as quickly as possible, the statement said.

Sidewalks on Strand Street will remain open for access to businesses and offices. Motorists are asked to obey traffic directions and detour signs. Flaggers will be available for informational purposes.
