A 3.9 magnitude earthquake briefly shook the Virgin Islands shortly after noon Sunday.

The quake occurred at 12:03 p.m. at 18.5 degrees latitude and 65.3 degrees longitude, or about 26 miles west-northwest of Charlotte Amalie. The depth was 58 miles beneath the ocean floor.

There was no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake, according to the Puerto Rico Seismic Center website. Small earthquakes are common in the region, and the center’s website lists two in March that it termed significant. A 3.1 was felt in the area on March 8.

The V.I. Territorial Emergency Agency sends out alerts that indicate that, on many days, the region records several earthquakes. As of 2 p.m. Sunday, four alerts were received, with the largest the 3.9 magnitude felt around noon. The others were a 3.4, a 2.5 and a 3.3.
