Public Works Clearing Rain Damage

0

Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said Monday crews are cleaning up debris and starting repairs on problem areas after heavy weekend rains caused major flooding on St. Thomas and St. John.

Smalls said in a news release Monday that ongoing construction projects mitigated much of the damage caused by the rain. The Havensight area is currently under construction as crews work to expand the road and Smalls said that the installation of an improved drainage structure helped to dissipate flooding the area more quickly than in previous storms.

Crews were sent out as soon as rain and lightning had cleared to remove debris and fallen trees.

The greatest flooding on St. John was along Centerline Road, which appears to have collapsed in one area, according to photos from St. John residents. The Source was unable to confirm the extent of the damage Monday, but photos show that a small portion of the road, marked off by orange barriers, had eroded on Friday.

In Monday’s news release, Smalls said Centerline Road has been a "trouble spot" for many years but is slated for repairs and improvement.

"The Virgin Islands recently won emergency funding from the Federal Highway Administration for road repairs and flood mitigation," the release said. "Because the funding was initially approved for one large project that has since been divided into four smaller ones — three on St. John and one on St. Thomas — the territory had to formally resubmit its application."

The four projects are expected to be approved in the next few weeks and once they are, Public Works will immediately post solicitations for bids and get ready for construction to begin, the release said.

According to residents, Centerline Road is the only route from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay.
