St. Croix Arsonists Torch Brand New Police Cars

Arson damaged six brand new police cars in a fenced auto lot at Metro Motors on St. Croix early Monday morning.

"There was a call at 1:30 a.m. reporting the cars on fire and V.I. Fire Services went in and put them out," V.I. Police Department Public Information Officer Melody Rames said Tuesday.

"Police officers are the ones everyone in the community turns to when they are in trouble, so I don’t know why someone would do something like this," Rames said, urging anyone with any information to let the department know.

The six cars were among a large shipment of police vehicles purchased recently with bond revenues approve last year. (See related links below)

Whoever torched the cars selected six cars spread out among the parked fleet, poured gasoline all over the gas tank and back of the car, with something put into the gas tank valve to try to light the tank, according to an employee of Metro Motors.

"They could be fixed, but it is a lot of damage," he said.

The damaged vehicles are insured, said Henry Williams, mechanics supervisor for the VIPD motor pool. After inspecting the vehicles Tuesday morning, Williams said the damage is extensive and the vehicles were brand new and may never really be as good as before. "They could be repaired maybe, but we want them replaced."

Detectives can be reached at 1-340-712-6077 or 1-340-712-6037. Those with information also can call 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS.

  1. “Police officers are the ones everyone in the community turns to when they are in trouble, so I don’t know why someone would do something like this,”

Really? Not “everyone” turns to the police. The street garbage that did this don’t want the police to get around the community. They are the bugs that shoot and rob the community and chase the tourism away. If the police cannot police themselves and their own property then what can we expect in the community.

Martial Law now. Sweep through the territory and fumigate the destructive bugs ruining the quality of life for those of us in the community and those who want to visit paradise as it should be.

  2. I would think this happened because the police don’t need new vehicles, and someone is trying to send that message. They should drive the vehicles they have until they cannot be driven any more just like most of the rest of us do. People are suffering, the government is laying people off, the private sector is not hiring, etc., so why should the taxpayers be buying the police new vehicles when the taxpayers cannot even afford a new vehicle. This is just shoving nonsense into the taxpayers’ faces. The government needs to quit spending money unless it is absolutely necessary. The taxpayers are getting tired of the government’s total disrespect in all of its forms, and we are to the point where we will not stand for it anymore.

  3. I also believe the same that if police is not able to take care of their own property then what common people should hope from them and by reading this post only two questions are coming in my mind 1)Are the police really applicable to take charge of all people security?2)Is the common man is secure in presence of this type of police who can’t take responsibility of their own things?
