V.I. Schools Have Milk Again

After several weeks without, V.I. public schools again have milk to serve students at lunch, according to the V.I. Department of Education.

"We understand that our inability to provide milk to the schools due to the recent closure of St. Thomas Dairies has been a concern for the community – particularly parents and students," Acting Education Commissioner Donna Frett-Gregory said in a statement Friday.

"We would like to assure everyone that, in working with our federal partners, we have been able to get the situation back on track with milk being distributed in the schools starting last week,” Frett-Gregory said. “We truly appreciate the public’s cooperation and continued feedback on this matter."

The St. Thomas-St. John District has received one container (48,114 servings of milk) to date, and two more containers are expected by May 25, according to the department. The St. Croix District has received three containers of milk (42,768 servings).

The department is expected to receive a total of six containers, each containing 2,640 cases of milk, for a total of 427,680 servings. The milk is expected to last throughout the remainder of the school year and cover Education’s summer programs.

Frett-Gregory said the department is currently finalizing arrangements with a USDA recommended supplier for the milk supply for the 2013-14 school year.

The last shipment of milk was delivered to schools on March 4 and the milk ran out around the third week of March, according to Education Department Public Information Officer Ananta Pancham.
