Two men have been identified as suspects in a 2009 shooting death that took place in Estate Bovoni, and one was extradited Saturday from Texas to face murder charges. The other is serving an eight-year prison sentence in Louisiana, the V.I. Police Department said Monday.

On March 24, 2009, Jahmari Joseph was shot and killed in Estate Bovoni in an area known as Gasso Hill. According to police reports, Joseph and his brother were walking in the area when shots were fired at them. Joseph later died from a gunshot wound he sustained during the shooting.

In the years since, detectives have kept the case alive, and on Nov. 16, 2012, secured first-degree murder arrest warrants against Ibn Z. Anderson and Stephenson Peltier. Police said they learned the two had left the territory on one-way tickets for the states within days of the crime, so the information was placed in the National Crime Information Center’s database.

Five months later, on May 6, Anderson was picked up by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Houston, Texas, during a routine patrol. Houston officers checked Anderson’s status on NCIC and contacted VIPD detectives.

On Saturday, detectives from the V.I. Police Major Crimes unit extradited Anderson back to St. Thomas.

Detectives served Peltier his first-degree murder arrest warrant May 16 at the Correctional Facility in Louisiana, where he is serving an eight-year sentence for robbery. Peltier will be extradited at a later date to stand trial in the Joseph murder case.

Both suspects face additional charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, four counts of unauthorized use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, and aiding and abetting.
