Hovensa has enough regular gasoline to last until the end of October and enough premium gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to last the year, the company announced Monday, on the eve of a special Senate session to appropriate money to pay to litigate with Hovensa over terms of closure.
After the Senate voted down a negotiated settlement to handle the closure of Hovensa, tax issues and the medium term fuel supply for St. Croix on Aug. 8, Gov. John deJongh Jr. issued a statement saying the existing concession agreement remains in force. He then called a special session to request funding for litigation with Hovensa. Last week, the owners of Hovensa said they might close the fuel storage and fuel rack at the shuttered St. Croix facility if the government insists on collecting customs duties on oil stored in the territory.
Monday evening it announced its projected fuel inventory "in response to concern in the community that Hovensa’s inventories of motor fuel for sale at its truck loading rack may soon be exhausted leaving residents without fuels for their vehicles, homes or businesses."
