Passing showers Wednesday morning will give way to rain with increased intensity and frequency during the afternoon, Odalys Martinez, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan said around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“But it’s hard to say the rainfall amount,” she said.

The potential for heavy rainfall will continue overnight and into Thursday, Martinez said.

She said winds will be gusty when the heavy rain falls.

The territory will remain on a flash flood watch till Friday.

The rain is part of a low pressure area located just south of the Virgin Islands Wednesday morning.

“It will continue to move west-northwest,” Martinez said of the low pressure area.

Currently, the National Hurricane Center gives it a 40 percent chance of becoming something stronger within the next 48 hours. However, longer term, there is a 60 percent chance of it developing.

“By then it will be north of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands,” Martinez said.

She expects the worst of the weather to clear the area by Friday but said there will still be lots of moisture around to bring showers Friday and Saturday.

“But the intensity and frequency should decrease,” she said.

Hurricane season, which began June 1, is advancing towards its Sept. 10 statistical peak, but forecasters warn that there is still a long way to go until the season officially ends Nov. 30.
