Lyra Elvira Sewer Collazo of St. Thomas died at the age of 95 on Aug. 29.
Collazo was an active member of Christchurch Methodist, 11 a.m. service, and the Benevolent Society. She was born to the late Alfred and Rosetta Sewer of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, on May 13, 1918. She was the eighth of 11 children.
Nine siblings have preceded her in death, leaving only one sister to mourn, Christalia Sewer Akins Scarborough. Also left to mourn the passing of Lyra Elvira Sewer Collazo is her special great-niece, adopted daughter and caregiver, Sheryl Daniel John. Other nieces are Sylvia Sewer-Barry of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Irma Sewer of St. Thomas; Lorna Sewer-Johnson of St. Thomas; Lucyleta George of St. Thomas; Carol Jones-Gunther of Covington, Ga.; Nadine Turpin-Lugo of Courtland Manor, N.Y.; and Adriane Akins and Debra Akins of N.J.
Other survivors include nephews: Montgomery Turpin of Pikesville, Md. and Vancito Sewer of St. Thomas; 40 great-nieces and great-nephews; 64 great-great nieces and great-great nephews; 38 great-great-great nieces and great-great-great nephews; god-daughters: Carol Jones-Gunter, Annette Barry, Desiree Sewer and Iasia John; close friends: Ivy Parson, Vadis Springette, Enid DeCastro, Calvin Henley and Arnold Thomas (also known as “Nully,”); and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
A first viewing will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, at Davis Funeral Home. A second viewing will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Christ Church Methodist. Interment will be in Western Cemetery No. 1.
