A lone armed gunman, identified by the V.I. Police Department as 27-year-old Gilberto Serrano, was arrested Wednesday morning 15 minutes after walking into the Scotia Bank office in Sunny Isles and stealing an undisclosed amount of cash and then fleeing on a bicycle, police said.

Initial reports from police on the scene indicated that Serrano entered the bank, demanded money and threatened the staff. The suspect fled the bank and got on a bicycle headed east. Police issued an all-points bulletin.

Based on the description of the suspect, an alert off-duty officer identified him on Rattan Road in the vicinity of Rams Auto. The off-duty officer and members of Special Operations Bureau, who were seconds away, apprehended the suspect at 10:14 a.m.

The stolen cash and the weapon used in the robbery were also confiscated, police said.

The VIPD said further information on the robbery would be released later in the day.

Editor’s note: This story was edited to correct the spelling of the suspect’s name, which was reported incorrectly by the police in the early news release.
