Joshua J. Rojas, 24, was identified by the V.I. Police Department as the suspect who fired at several people near the Asylum Bar in Contant on Thursday.
In a Friday news release, the police said one person was injured during the afternoon incident, which caused police to close Contant Road near the Ulla Muller Elementary School.
Rojas attempted to elude officers, the police said, but was captured and arrested.
Police were called to the scene of the shooting about 4:45 p.m. According to the preliminary police report, witnesses saw a man, later identified as Rojas, arguing with another man while holding what appeared to be a black rifle.
Witnesses said a third man, who was later identified as a retired superior court marshal, approached the two who were arguing and attempt to calm the situation.
The retired marshal told police he advised Rojas that he should not be walking around with a weapon. Rojas later pointed the weapon toward the marshal, who was armed with his licensed firearm, and there was an exchange of gunfire. The marshal was struck in his right thigh and the suspect fled the area.
Police cordoned off the area to block the flow of traffic and began searching for the suspect. Rojas was apprehended less than an hour later, police said.
St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island Police Chief Darren Foy congratulated the officers and other law enforcement who responded to this active shooter event.
