St. John and St. Thomas Motor Vehicle Bureaus Experience Problems

Motor Vehicle Bureaus on St. Thomas and St. John are experiencing problems, Director Jerris T. Browne said in a press release issued Friday.

The St. John Bureau was closed all week because of computer problems and a lack of an inspector, as well as the Christmas holidays. The computer problems are expected to continue into next week but vehicles will be inspected starting Monday. However, the inspection results cannot be entered into the computer, Assistant Director Myrna George said.

Those drivers who get their vehicles inspected before the month ends on Tuesday will receive special permits in lieu of the actual registration that will allow those drivers to remain on the road. George said those permits are good until Jan. 7.

Browne said the police will be notified of the special permit situation.

No driver’s licenses will be issued on St. John, and George said special permits are not available for people whose licenses expire Dec. 31. Those St. John residents must go to St. Thomas to get them renewed or for new licenses.

“Bring your expired licenses,” George said.

George said replacements for lost licenses will not be issued on St. Thomas because the computer issues mean staff can’t access records.

George said the St. Thomas motor vehicle registration and driver’s license servers are experiencing intermittent problems due to excessive power surges that have damaged these servers. Attempts are being made to repair them, she said.

However, the replacement servers are ready to go in production and the bureau is waiting for the software engineer to reconfigure the software.

“It is quite a challenge for us at the end of the year but rest assured that we are working around the clock to rectify this problem as quickly as possible,” Browne said.

Motor Vehicle Bureaus will close at 1 p.m. Tuesday and will be closed Wednesday for the New Year’s holiday.
