Territory Welcomes New Year’s Babies in Both Districts

The first baby born in the territory this year arrived at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix at 2:44 a.m. Jan. 1, followed by another baby, also a girl, born at 11:51 a.m. at the Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas.

Amaia Aurora Cabrera was born prematurely at JFL and remained in stable condition in the neonatal intensive care unit Thursday, according to JFL spokesman Samuel Baptiste.

Her parents, Laura Valdez and Mario Cabrera, requested that the newborn’s weight and length not be disclosed to the public. Caprera was the first of three babies born on New Year’s Day at the St. Croix hospital. Gifts from the hospital were presented before Valdez was discharged Thursday.

“I am extremely proud of all the clinical and support staff at JFL as they are always ready to perform their duties for this community no matter the day or the hour,” said Dr. Kendall Griffith, JFL interim chief executive officer. “I am also thankful and happy that Amaia was delivered safely and I congratulate her parents and family as they have given our community the first baby in 2014.”

On St. Thomas, little Olivia McPartland was born to Tatjana and William McPartland weighing 8 pounds, 5.5 ounces, according to Eunice Gumbs, Schneider chief nursing officer. Olivia was one of two babies born Jan. 1 on St. Thomas and arrived after 30 hours of labor, according to her mother.

“It’s all good. The baby is doing great. I’m doing great,” Tatjana McPartland said.
