Ag Department Partners to Promote Local Meat

1

Residents will get a chance to discover – or rediscover – the joy of locally produced meat at a tasting event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Plaza Extra East in Christiansted.

The event is hosted by the V.I. Department of Agriculture in partnership with Sejah Farm of the Virgin Islands, Good to Chew Catering and Plaza Extra Supermarket East. The goal is to promote public awareness about the sale of local meat.

The tasting will feature samples of deliciously cooked, locally raised lamb for tasting by the public and supermarket patrons.

The lamb was raised by Dale and Yvette Browne of Sejah Farm and the meat was dressed by the abattoir staff at the Department of Agriculture. The lamb will be prepared and presented by executive chef Anton Doos and his talented students of Good to Chew Catering at the St. Croix Educational Complex’s Career and Technical Education Center.

The public is invited to visit and sample the free tasty preparations of braised leg of lamb, curry stew shoulders and crown roast of ribs.

Commissioner of Agriculture Louis E. Petersen Jr. thanked all the partners for their support and participation.

“This partnership represents a joint effort to encourage the production and marketing of local agricultural products through our Virgin Fresh marketing campaign.”

“I commend the hard work of the Browne family, the dedication of my staff, the talent and culinary skills of Chef Doos and his students at Good to Chew Catering and Plaza Extra East’s support for our farmers,” Petersen said. “We also appreciate the tremendous public support demonstrated during the month of February at a similar event at Plaza Extra West,” he added.
