St. Thomas, St. Croix Vehicle Accidents Kill Two

A man has passed away from injuries from a Tuesday car accident on St. Croix and a woman was killed in another accident on St. Thomas.

Police on St. Croix are investigating a fatal car accident that caused the death of a 39-year-old female. Police were notified of the auto collision a few minutes after 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the V.I. Police Department.

Officers investigating the scene said a 1988 multicolored GMC pickup truck and a 2007 black Ford Explorer were involved in the collision. The GMC was traveling west to east on the Melvin Evans Highway when it collided into the left side of the Explorer that was traveling east to west and making a right turn at the Clifton Hill signal light.

The accident victim was seated in the Explorer on the left side of the back seat. She was taken to the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital where she later died from her injuries. Police are withholding the name of the victim at this time so family members can have the opportunity to inform extended family members.

On St. Thomas police are investigating a car accident that caused serious injuries to a 54-year-old male pedestrian. The victim died the next day. The accident occurred on the Weymouth Rhymer Highway near the entrance to the New Hernhut Church.

Police were dispatched around 9:10 p.m. Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian told police he was driving west on Weymouth Highway in a beige Toyota Four Runner when he struck 54-year-old Jeffery Smith, who was crossing the road from north to south pushing a shopping cart.

According to medical personnel, the accident caused severe injuries to the lower extremities of the victim, who was transported by ambulance to the Schneider Regional Medical Center. The victim died from his injuries Tuesday at 12:30 a.m. according medical staff.

Both cases are under investigation.
