Rain, Thunderstorms Expected to Continue

Hazardous weather is expected to continue for the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the rains that canceled events across the territory Saturday are likely to continue well into the week, according to the National Weather Service.

An upper level low-pressure system blowing through the Caribbean from the northeast is creating unstable conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms, which might include small hail, strong winds, frequent lightning.

While no flood warnings have been issued as of Saturday night, the NWS said some urban and gut flooding may occur with the heavier thunderstorms.

The upper low is expected to meander over the local area through the weekend, continuing to produce conditions favorable to the development of showers and thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm activity will gradually diminish through Wednesday. The 10-day forecast for the territory predicts a chance of thunderstorms through Thursday, easing to partly cloudy on Friday, and then predicts more thunderstorms for the following weekend.

On Friday the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority warned residents that rainfalls have caused a large inflow of water into the sewer collection system. The heavy rainfalls have caused overflows in certain areas and manhole covers to pop up.

VIWMA asked residents to report any overflows to the authority at 715-9199 on St. Thomas, 712-4999 on St. Croix or 774-2141 on St. John.

The current condition of the sewer lines allows for the inflow and infiltration of storm water into the sewer system and may exceed the pumping capacity at various pump stations that carry the flow from residential areas to the wastewater treatment plants, VIWMA said in its news release. Until the rains and the run-off subside, the sewer collection system will continue to be impacted.
