USVI, BVI Sailors Take Wins in 22nd International Optimist Regatta

After three days of beautiful sailing weather, the 22nd International Optimist Regatta ended Sunday, and sailors and their parents began packing up their Optis to ship them back to their home sailing clubs. Local British and U.S. Virgin Island sailors took top honors in both fleets, but visiting sailors also finished strong and took home medals.

Of the 59 sailors in the Optimist fleet, Rayne Duff of the Royal BVI Yacht Club came in first with a total of 13 points. St. Thomas Yacht Club’s Teddy Nicolosi came in second with a total of 46 points. And just behind Nicolosi came Thomas Rice from SailStrong Youth Racing / Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in third place with 54 total race points.

The Optimist fleet sailors’ scores are the total of each sailor’s rank in the 10 total races they sailed over the course of the three-day regatta.

The Optimist Green fleet – Greenies – was 22 boats deep. St. Thomas Yacht Club’s Caroline Sibilly placed first with a total of 26 race points. Thommie Grit from Sarasota Youth Sailing in Florida came in close behind Sibilly with a total of 30 points for second place. And José Diaz of Club Náutico de San Juan earned third place with 33 race points.

Greenies’ scores were calculated by totaling each sailor’s rank in each of the 18 total races they sailed during the regatta.

Both STYC assistant manager Greer Scholes and St. Thomian Greenies race official Paul Stoken praised the entire Green fleet’s performance and improvement at Sunday’s award ceremony.
