All V.I. public schools, the V.I. Government and both University of the Virgin Islands campuses will be open Tuesday as normal, as Hurricane Gonzalo’s effects were less than anticipated, the schools and government have announced.

"After continuing to monitor the weather reports yesterday evening, the Department made the decision to close the St. Thomas-St. John public schools as a proactive measure," Education Commissioner Donna Frett-Gregory said early Tuesday morning in a statement. "Fortunately, we were spared any major impact from the storm and after continuing to closely monitor the weather and consulting with the leadership team from the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency this morning, we have decided that it is safe to open schools. Our St. Thomas-St. John District team has confirmed that buses will be available and on the road at the usual time."

Buses are also up and running on St. Croix, and District schools are expected to open as normal, according to the department.

The Department of Human Services will open senior and Head Start centers territory-wide and the Meals on Wheels Program will deliver as scheduled Tuesday. For more information, call the VI Department of Human Services in your area.

The University of the Virgin Islands will open on its normal schedule Tuesday. Operations are back to normal. UVI students who live on St. John and may be affected by port closures should call UVI’s St. John Academic Center at 693-1585 for class accommodations. However the U.S. Coast Guard has reopened the territory’s ports.
The Reichhold Center Box Office is closed Tuesday and will reopen Wednesday.
The Human Services Department will open all senior and head start centers across the territory. Meals on wheels will be delivered.
