Two St. Croix men were rescued Monday by the U.S. Coast Guard after their 21-foot Boston Whaler capsized about seven nautical miles northeast of St. Croix, the Coast Guard said in a Monday press release.

Juan Reyes Serrano, 49, and Benigo Rodríguez, 27, were fishing at about 1:20 p.m. Monday in the vicinity of Lang Bank when their boat began taking on water and capsized.

Coast Guard Boat Forces personnel in St. Croix received a report from local police, who relayed a cell phone call from one of the fishermen. The fisherman had contacted his wife to report the problem.

A Coast Guard boat crew immediately got under way to search for the distressed fishermen. They located Serrano and Rodríguez clinging to the capsized vessel and proceeded to safely recover them from the water.

The two fishermen were transported by the Coast Guard boat crew to Altoona Lagoon in Christiansted, where they were released to waiting family members.
