The Virgin Islands National Guard (VING) will conduct a retirement ceremony for its retiring assistant adjutant general. The ceremony for Brigadier General Elton Lewis is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, in the Brigadier General Gerard L. James Sr. Joint Force Headquarters at the Estate Bethlehem Military Installation on St. Croix. The community is invited to attend.
During his 38 years of service, Gen. Lewis served in various military positions including commander of the 661st Military Police Company, commander of the 104th Troop Command Battalion, director of the joint staff and his last position as the assistant adjutant general. As a civilian, Lewis served in leadership and command positions in local government agencies. He was commissioner of the V. I. Police Department. On May 3, 2011, he was sworn-in as the director of the V. I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA).
Lewis enlisted in the VING in September 1976 and earned a direct commission in July 1985 into the Military Police Corps. Throughout his career, he has had numerous achievements. He graduated from the U. S. Army War College, MIT Lincoln Laboratory Homeland Protection Course, Harvard Kennedy School General and Flag Officer Homeland Security Executive Seminar and the U. S. Northern Command Joint Task Force Commander Course.
Lewis’ military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Virgin Islands Commendation Medal, Virgin Islands Long and Faithful Service Medal with Numeral 5, and Virgin Islands Emergency Service Ribbon.
