Cane Bay 5-Mile Jingle Bell Run Closes Out St. Croix Roadrunners' Year

Fa…La…La…La…La…La Group Cane Bay 5-Mile Jingle Bell Run…Cane Bay Beach, St. Croix…(photo: V.I.Pace Runners)It’s been a busy year for road runners on St. Croix — lots of miles logged, calories burned, memories made. The running of the 32nd Cane Bay 5-Mile Road Race (also called the Jingle Bell Run) on Saturday morning saw a group of over two dozen runners came out to the picturesque Cane Bay Road to take part in the event, which was the last race of the year on the V.I.Pace Runners’ calendar. Some did it to loosen up after competing in last week’s St. Croix International Marathon and V.I. Half-Marathon, which used the same course; some just did it for fun and to capture the Christmas spirit. With a cruise ship headed for Frederiksted, Hamms Bluff, Davis Bay, as the backdrop (which also were the sets for two famous movies: “The Island of Dr. Moreau” and “Trading Places”), the runners closed out the year in a festive mood.
Juan Robles, winner of the V.I. Half-Marathon Championship last week and track coach at St. Croix Central High School, brought along Phillip Francis, one of his student/athletes to do the race, and they cruised through it, finishing first and second. Robles clocked 33:44 and Phillips clocked 33:47; Mike Klein, V.I. Ultra Champion, and his wife Bridget, winner of the V.I. Marathon Championship title last week, finished in a tie for third overall with a time of 35:11; Nikolas Franks was the fourth place male in 35:17; Troy Holloway right on his heels, was fifth in 35:20.
Bridget Klein led the females across the line as she prepares for her first St. Croix Scenic 50 Miler coming up next month; Jen Sturm just finished the Honolulu Marathon last week and finished second in 41:27; Laura Kaogh was third in 45:26; Regina Stevens was fourth in 45:49; Amanda Cohen was fifth in 46:11.
