St. John winter resident Paula Savel was fretting that she’d have to get a new bank when she heard rumors that Merchants Commercial Bank was closing its St. John branch located in Greenleaf Commons near the Westin Resort and Villas.

Not so, according to James Crites, bank president, who said Monday he had no idea where the rumor started but that maybe the changes at other banks on St. John somehow fueled it.

Scotia Bank closed its office at the Marketplace shopping center in September 2014. And First Bank is moving its St. John branch from downtown Cruz Bay to the space previously used by Scotia Bank at the Marketplace sometime in March, an employee at the St. John branch said Monday.

The St. Thomas office of Merchants Commercial Bank isn’t closing either, Crites said.
