Volunteers Sought for '1 Billion Rising'

On Valentines Day, Feb 14, St. Thomas will take part in a worldwide plea to stop violence against women and girls, and organizers are urging volunteers to help make it happen.

Women and men in more than 200 countries will come together in "One Billion Rising,” the largest day of mass action ever, with a goal of stopping violence against women.

The event will mark the third year the Family Resource Center participates in the event, according to a news release friom the organization, and Vivian St. Juste, FRC director, invited the community to be part of the demonstration.

"This will be our third annual ‘Rise,’ and we are excited to add new flavor to our Valentine Day event.” she said.

The FRC website reads in part: "WE RISE!! We Rise Against the Violence Plaguing Females in This and ALL Communities. … We Rise For Fair Rulings from our Justice System. WE RISE!! We Rise Against Innocence Taken and Innocence Lost.”

The performance will start at noon at Emancipation Garden, where the first "Rise” was held in 2013. Women, men and children from all backgrounds will gather to dance, sing, and speak out.

"We invite people to come to our office for rehearsal times and to get details of our show,” St. Juste said. While mum on the details of the production, she did say it will be accompanied by African drums and voices.

The Family Resource Center is a private nonprofit corporation that provides programs and services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Its mission is to end family violence in the Virgin Islands.

The center is celebrating 34 years of service to the community and St. Juste said it will continue until its services are no longer needed.
