Some of the best vistas to be seen on St. Thomas are no farther away than the air conditioned comfort of the Tourism Bureau's Visitor Center across from Vendors Plaza.
Jennifer Rey, new director of the Visitor Center, announces a show of visual art titled, "Seen in the VI". The works of Mercedes Berruz (oils), Doreen Walsh (batiks), Clifton Berry (prints), Corinne Van Rensselaer (print) and Kat Sowa (print) highlight scenes throughout the Virgin Islands.
Berruz, who studied oil painting with Eric Winter, uses half her living room in Bovoni as a
studio and enjoys painting on sight throughout St Thomas.
Walsh coordinated the mural for the DPW Building, and has large commissioned works in the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's Crown and Anchor Lounge and the St Thomas Reformed Church. She is one of the artists chosen by Rodriguez Auto Parts and ADT Securities for their popular company calendars, produced by the St Thomas-St. John Arts Council.
Berry's images are familiar and popular throughout the islands. He has made his work accessible by producing prints.
VanRensselaer is a self taught watercolorist. She owns and manages the Color of Joy boutique and gallery in Red Hook. Her map of the Caribbean mixes the accurate details of the islands and surrounding waters with their beauty.
Sowa co-owns Bajo el Sol in St John. Her work was also selected by ADT Securities for their company calendar. Her watercolors have a strong sense of light on her subjects.
The show features such sights as Oswald Harris Court youngsters playing marbles, the boats of Frenchtown, the neighborhood beach of Hull Bay, the shoreline of Trunk Bay, as well as a map of the Caribbean.
Open Monday – Friday 8 p.m. until 4 p.m., Sat 8 a.m. until 1 a.m.. Call Jennifer Rey 774-8784 or Gloria Gumbs 774-USVI for more information. Show runs through April.
